Bull reaffirms its strategy to modernize the ‘legacy’ environments at the heart of the Data Center
This move is in line with Bull’s strategy to open up and modernize the ‘legacy’ environments at the heart of many large-scale Data Centers. The challenge is to enable the IT Departments of major companies and central government to evolve their central ‘legacy’ databases to PostgreSQL – the leading Open Source relational database. The key to this is greater openness and flexibility, at a lower cost than traditional solutions, with much easier integration with mainframe applications in internal ‘Clouds’.
The PostgreSQL is already being used by numerous large organizations worldwide. In particular, it has been available on Bull novascale gcos 8 since 2010, where it manages around a billion queries a day.
PostgreSQL is supported by a dynamic and independent international community. The annual PostgreSQL conference that took place end of March in New York will enable Ken Rosensteel, Database Architect at the Bull Engineering Center in Phoenix (Arizona), to share best practice and lessons learned from migrating ‘legacy’ environments to PostgreSQL (https://www.postgresqlconference.org/content/large-customers-want-postgresql-too).
Cutting the cost of ownership by a factor of two… or even 30
Over and above the benefits of modernizing and opening up ‘legacy’ environments, adopting PostgreSQL at the heart of the Data Center means IT Departments can make very significant savings on cost of ownership. Research carried out by Bull experts shows that the cost of ownership compared with using a proprietary database can be anything between two and over 30 times lower; depending on the type of server and the high-availability solutions being used these costs include, for an equivalent level of service delivery, license fees and support costs over three years.
“To ensure successful exchanges with Unix, Windows and Linux environments, GCOS 7 customers benefit from native interoperability solutions, Web services and gateways,” explains Jean-François Bauduin, Director of novascale gcos systems at Bull. “Now we are further strengthening our strategy to open up our mainframes, by adding the PostgreSQL database to our range of available offerings. This is a key element in our vision for how GCOS 7 Data Centers will evolve, especially with the future prospect of private Cloud-type architectures. Our customers will discover that this is a real boost to their competitiveness and budget optimization.”
A comprehensive infrastructure services solution including round-the-clock support
Bull’s solution to migrate older-generation databases to PostgreSQL is one of the most comprehensive available. In particular, it features consulting and implementation services, as well as optimization, for both infrastructures and applications. For environments destined to run mission-critical applications – the core of Bull’s business activities – the Group offers a complete, multi-level support service.
